Collaborative Ribbon Building in Kansas

Building Partnerships and the Lung Cancer Community In the Kansas City Metro!

In January, 2023, The White Ribbon Project in collaboration with Lung Cancer Research Foundation and the University of Kansas Cancer Center had a vision for a community outreach event to raise lung cancer awareness and facilitate impactful introductions for all who have been affected by this disease.

On May 20,2023, local residents from LUNGevity Foundation, American Lung Association, Go2 For Lung Cancer & Kansas Department of Health & Environment rolled up their sleeves to paint 100 ribbons to be distributed throughout Kansas and Missouri. There was an opportunity to also write a message of hope to the future recipients of these ribbons.

Over 60 people came together at Heritage Park in Olathe, KS to enjoy this event, while building new relationships. A special thank you to LCRF volunteer Chuck Loch and his friends for cutting and sanding 96 ribbons in advance of this event!

The Community Build was possible due to the generous funding of Genentech, a member of the Roche Group. The Genentech Team showed up in force along with a large life like inflatable lung which all the children thoroughly enjoyed.

While most associate Kansas City with iconic BBQ, our friends at Minsky’s Pizza and Whole Foods provided delicious refreshments of pizza and Chantilly Cake!

The White Ribbon Project would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in making this lung cancer awareness event a tremendous success and blue print for community partnerships across the United States.

The White Ribbon Project ribbons are now available for distribution at Gilda’s Club in KC MO (https://www.gildasclubkc.org ) and Turning Point in Leawood Kansas (https://www.kansashealthsystem.com/health-resources/turning-point ). Ribbons can also be distributed by appointment at many of the University of Kansas Cancer Centers throughout the KC Metro.

• November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Do you know the origin story of the White Ribbon Project? Do you know this grassroots movement originated as a result of Heidi's frustration that her cancer center did not have any plans to recognize Lung Cancer Awareness Month, learn more https://www.thewhiteribbonproject.org/origin-story.

Our mission at The White Ribbon Project is to take accountability/action for educating the public about lung cancer. We encourage YOU to simply ASK your cancer center & medical teams "What are you doing to recognize lung cancer awareness month?" Use your white ribbon to start a conversation! Our white ribbon community is changing lung cancer awareness through our community ribbon builds. There is great impact when we work within our own community alongside our cancer center/medical teams, and our resources to raise awareness and educate. Kentucky Legislation Signing

HB 219 CEREMONIAL SIGNING

Do you live in or near Kentucky or will be there on July 15, 2022? If so, make it a point to be at The Capital Rotunda! Bring your friends and family, advocates, survivors, caregivers, and anyone you know touched by lung cancer to the beautiful state capital rotunda!! It is an incredible opportunity to be seen and heard all over the country with this ground-breaking legislation!

“Kentucky is the first state in the union to pass this level of transformative legislation, advanced by our own Representative Kimberly Moser. Ky is setting the bar for lung cancer screening, soon to be #1 in the nation! This platform of uncontested team-based success is attracting attention to this relentless killer. We are going after it and showing the world how it can be done. We truly are raising hope for lung cancer survivors, increasing research dollars, and defeating the stigma and nihilism so entrenched in the lung cancer arena. We will be presenting Governor Beshear with a White Ribbon, with love, to share our profound appreciation for his leadership in this space and as a tribute to the challenging work and dedication of our Kentucky Congress and all that helped to make this happen!”

~ Dr. Michael Gieske, Director of Lung Cancer Screening St. Elizabeth Healthcare
